托福阅读中的词汇题对于考生来讲属于不可失分的基础题型，但是，考生往往忽略了这些词汇本身的功用——即可以作为很好的拓展词汇进行语言素材的积累。

环球教育孙恺吉老师从托福阅读真题机经中择取适合学生进行学习辨识的词汇，将输入型的语言考察转化为输出型的素材积累，以此提高学生全面的语言能力。

1. diminish = decrease

diminish的英文释义是to become or to make sth. become smaller, weaker, 与decrease（to become or make sth become smaller in size, number）非常接近，但是后者更加着重体量和数量上的减少，两者常见于托福阅读中的同义词替换。

Eg.  We should try to diminish the cost of production.
我们应尽力减少生产成本。

Eg. This species of bird is decreasing in numbers every year.
这种鸟的数量在逐年减少。

值得注意的是diminish中的min往往表示微小的事物(=mini),相关派生词如minimum，minimal，miniature也是托福常考词汇，大家须一并记忆。而decrease中的词根cre,creas表示的生长、产生的意思，de表方向下，则为减少，反义词是大家熟悉的increase。

2. rudimentary=primitive
rudimentary英译为not highly or fully developed=basic，其中rud-root, ment是名词后缀，再变为形容词。

Eg. He had only a rudimentary knowledge of French.

他对法语只是略知皮毛。

Primitive也是高频词，它不仅包含着basic基础的这层意思，还有very simple and old-fashioned, especially when sth. is also not convenient and comfortable 它更为侧重发展水平低的、落后的基础这一层含义。

Eg. It's using some rather primitive technology.

它使用的是非常古老的技术。

单词中的prim=first/chief,表示"第一,主要的;首要"，有非常多的派生词汇premier adj.第一的, 首要的 n.总理primary最初的,主要的,基本的

prime首要的;最好的,第一流的。

3. prolong=extend

这一组词记忆起来相当容易，long大家都很熟悉，pro表示向前，如progress、propulsion，prolong自然就是延长了。而extend的tend表示趋势,ex-有向外的意思，extend就是延长。

Eg. People have all along been seeking to prolong life.

人们一直在寻求长寿之道.

The caves extend for some 19 kilometers.

那些洞穴深约19公里。

在托福阅读中，这一组的衍生词也是多次出现，如long=extended.

4. excessive e=too much

excessive的英译为greater than what seems reasonable or appropriate 即过分的；过度的，所以说这个单词的感情色彩偏贬义。

Eg. Excessive weight gain doesn't do you any good.

体重过度增加对你没有任何好处.

Eg. Excessive conformity is usually caused by fear of disapproval.

过于墨守成规通常都是由于担心得不到认可。

而托福常考词abundant一般比较中性或者更正能量一些：

Eg.  China is abundant with natural resources.

中国自然资源丰富.

affluent则直接倾向于表示财富上的多，比如说affluent Western countries富裕的西方国家。

我们继续细究下excessive.其中，cess=go,表示"行走,前进",ex表出，向外，则excessive就是过剩的，去除形容词后缀excess为名词，过剩。exceed是动词，超出。均为托福常用词汇。

5. ornament=decoration

对于这组词，大家可以记住相类似的名词：adornment，embellishment。

6.  stamina=endurance

Stamina n.精力；耐力 (stamen-雄蕊)

Eg. Distance tests a horse's stamina.

路遥知马力。

You have to have a lot of stamina to be a top-class dancer.  

你必须有很强的毅力才能成为一流的舞蹈演员。

大家可以从例句中看出stamina是更侧重体力（physical）的，而endurance的英译为the ability to continue doing sth painful or difficult for a long period of time without complaining，我们把它的英译翻译过来可以这样讲：任劳任怨的坚持，可以算是一种毅力。

Eg. This event tests both physical and mental endurance.

该比赛项目既是对体力也是对心理承受力的考验。

Endurance的词根dur=last/hard,表示"持久,延续,坚硬"，常见的形容词有durable持久的,耐久的，动词则为endure。
